4 Things You Must Do When Visiting Ludington, MI
Our visit to this lakeside town was short but sweet! Whether you’re seeking adventure or relaxation, Ludington has something for everyone. Here are our top four recommendations for a family-friendly trip:
1. Play at Waterfront Park
Located right in town, Waterfront Park is a must-visit spot for families. This beautiful park features a lighthouse, marina, large playground, and grassy areas perfect for running around. Our kids played hard here for hours, while we enjoyed chatting with other friendly families. The gorgeous weather, gentle breeze off the lake, and flying seagulls added to the charm. It’s the perfect place to unwind while the kids burn off energy.
2. Grab a Bite at Jamesport Brewing Company
For a delicious, family-friendly dining experience, Jamesport Brewing Company was our favorite spot. Located near the park, this cozy restaurant offered both indoor and outdoor seating. We opted for the outdoor area, which had yard games and plenty of space for the kids to explore. Cornhole and giant checkers kept our little ones entertained while we waited for our food. The meals were delicious, the drinks refreshing, and the atmosphere inviting. Our boys even made a new friend, an older child who played so gently with them. It was a delightful dining experience for all of us.
3. Eat Ice Cream at House of Flavors
After a fun-filled time at Waterfront Park, we strolled along the marina to House of Flavors, a local gem famous for its whimsical decor and paper straw wrappers stuck to the ceiling. The line out the door was a clear sign of its popularity, and it didn’t disappoint. Watching our boys share a cone on a themed bench outside is a memory we’ll cherish forever. The ice cream was delicious, and the charming ambiance made the experience even more special.
4. Hike to Big Sable Point Lighthouse
This adventure was what I like to call “type 2 fun”—fun in hindsight but challenging in the moment. The hike to Big Sable Point Lighthouse is a four-mile round trip, and I knew our kids wouldn’t make it without assistance. So, I brought along a wagon to pull them. Little did I realize the trail’s sandy terrain would make the journey much harder than expected.
Thankfully, a kind family saw me struggling and offered to help. Together, we pushed and pulled our way to the lighthouse. The kindness of strangers made the experience truly heartwarming. Once we arrived, the lighthouse itself was fascinating. We learned about its history, explored the grounds, and even discovered that volunteers live there temporarily to maintain the property.
The trek back was tough—I had to pull the wagon alone—but the memories we made were worth it. This adventure taught me to embrace challenges and appreciate the bright side: the accomplishment of doing something hard, the beauty we saw together, and the connections we made along the way.
